Nicosia and Shadow Show
Nicosia, the divided capital of Cyprus, is truly unique. Many nations have ruled over Cyprus and left their traces. The former St. Sophia Cathedral with its flying buttresses and arched portals is built in the Gothic style of the 13th century and was the coronation place of the Lusignan Kings. During the Ottoman period, it was converted into the Selimiye Mosque. The covered bazaar offers a variety of vegetables, fruits, delicious kinds of sweets and nuts, as well as typical souvenirs.
In the Bűyűk Han, the last puppeteer Mr. Mehmet will perform a traditional show of Hacivat and Karagőz. After the show, you can ask questions and get more information.
From the eighth floor outlook platform of the Saray Hotel, enjoy the view over Nicosia. Leaving the Kyrenia Gate, you will pass the magnificent fortifications built by the Venetians.
- Pick-up by bus from your hotel in the morning between 8:30 am - 9:00 am.
- Guided walk begins at the Kyrenia Gate, the former entrance to the medieval city. The Selimiye Mosque (former St. Sophia Cathedral) is a good example of Gothic architecture in North Cyprus. Since the Ottoman times, the cathedral has been turned into a mosque. In the covered bazaar, get the whiff of fresh fruits and vegetables and try different sweets like Lokum. Your guide will give you a lot of information about the fruits and vegetables growing on the island.
- In the Büyük Han (Kervansaray), Mr. Mehmet welcomes you and will perform his show in Turkish. The introduction is in English.
- The shadow show performance takes about 45 minutes.
- Opportunity for lunch and time of your own. In the afternoon, return to the hotel.
- Guided walk back to the bus.
- Travel to your hotel.
