This trip can be tailor made throughout the year to suit your requirements.
Enjoy three stunning walking trails along the Kyrenia Mountain Range.
With a friend or partner, or as a small group (min. 2 participants), you can enjoy the highlights of the Kyrenia Mountain Range with these three carefully selected walking trails. These trails offer a delightful blend of history and nature, allowing you to explore an impressive Crusader castle and some of the hidden mountain churches and monasteries of North Cyprus and all set in beautiful scenery with stunning views in a variety of natural settings.
A taxi driver familiar with each of the walking routes will bring you to the starting point of each walk. From here you will follow a detailed description of the walking trail to reach your final destination point. On arrival at the final destination, the taxi driver will meet you (at a pre-arranged pick-up time) and take you back to your hotel.
The walking trails range from an easy to a medium level of difficulty and are from 4-5 hours in duration.
Good, solid footwear is recommended! Walking poles are also useful, as well as a small rucksack for water and food. Some sun-protection is always a good idea. In spring and autumn, a raincoat is useful to have close at hand though it is rarely needed.
Day 1 - Arrive and settle into the hotel.
Ambelia Village rests 1000 feet above sea level on a terraced hillside. From every balcony and patio in the village, you can enjoy the panoramic view of Bellapais Village and Kyrenia (Girne). With the sea in front of you and the mountains as the backdrop, you will feel surrounded by nature. Depending on the arrangement, our agent will meet you for the briefing either in the evening or in the morning.
Day 2 - St. Hilarion - Bogaz Pass - Bellapais – 12.7 km (5 hours).
You will be picked up from our car and brought to the Crusader Castle St. Hilarion. The car will wait and take you to the starting point of your walk to Bellapais. From a crusader castle to a village with an abbey dating back to the 12th century. This is a lovely day’s walk for its views and historical depth. You start to climb up and reach a plateau. From time to time, you will enjoy superb views of Kyrenia town and the sea. During the second half of the walk, you start to climb up the ridge to Bellapais village. The Abbey rises with all its magnificence. A rest under the ‘Tree of Idleness’ is well deserved before you reach your hotel.
Day 3 - Buffavento Restaurant (Besparmak) - Alevkaya Forestry Station, 10 km (4 Hours).
The car brings you to the prominent 750-meter high Besparmak Mountain resembling a clenched fist. Today’s hike goes further eastwards around this legendary mountain towards the Alevkaya picnic area. Green pines, dark cypresses and red-stemmed Arbutus trees grow along the path and form a roof canopy until you reach the abandoned Armenian monastery of Sourp Magar the last part is uphill and a short while on tarmac road until you reach Alevkaya Forest Station and picnic place where your car is waiting to take you back to the hotel.
Day 4 - Alevkaya Picnic site - Antiphonitis Church 13 km (5 Hours).
You will be taken by car to the starting point. This day’s trail takes you into a forest where you will walk between wild strawberry trees, rockroses, pine trees and as you are mostly under the forest canopy, there will be some shade. Again, quite often you will be able to switch views and see the Mesaora plain to the south and the Mediterranean Sea on the north side. At the end of this most pleasurable walk, you will arrive at a Byzantine church. Antiphonitis is the perfect place for a rest. Allow yourself some time there, before you will be picked up and brought back to Bellapais.
