This tailor made week of walking along the northern coastline of Cyprus takes travellers across sections of the trail over the Besparmak mountains, often without another soul in sight. This walking holiday route will take you along the Besparmak trail so as to experience the sweeping Mesaoria plain as well as the shimmering blue hues of the Mediterranean.
From crusader castles and ancient monasteries to seaside citadels and rural villages, this self-guided holiday conjures up Turkish Cyprus at its very best with hand-picked, family-run, accommodation providing a warm and welcome night's rest after a great day spent walking.
DAY 1 - The trip begins upon check in to the hotel. In the evening or the next morning, you will be met by our agent who will explain to you about the trail and give you information and maps.
DAY 2: Tatlisu pass - Connecting road 16.7 km, Stage 10.
You start this walk with a climb of 900 meters for the first 5 km so prepare yourself for some heart pumping. After that, it levels itself out and afterward continues on a much-appreciated downhill. Constant countryside, no villages to pass through on this trail.
DAY 3: Connecting Rd - Kantara village 7.3 km, Stage 11 (with an optional visit to Kantara castle).
Hike along the northern coast to Mersinlik. The walk begins above the village passing through a young pine underwood to the mountain stronghold of Kantara. Gorgeous views over the shore and the Mesaoria plain please the eye until the stronghold is reached.
DAY 4: Kantara village - Yedikonuk 16.3 km, Stage 12.
This stage is a gradual descent from Kantara village to Yedikonuk village. Along this path, you will be able to see Kantara castle for a while in all its majesty. There are also brilliant views of the coastline and the mountains.
DAY 5: Yedikonuk - Esenkoy, 19.4 km, Stage 13.
During this stage, you will be walking right by the sea. This can clearly be called a coastal walk but not before you descend from Yedikonuk on a steep track where you drop 200 meters in 2 km. Eventually, the village of Esenkoyis reached after another short climb.
DAY 6: Esenkoy - Sipahi, 17.9 km, Stage 14.
Getting closer and deeper into the Karpaz peninsula and its unspoiled beauty. Some of the terrains here are a bit desert-like and similar to the Australian outback - but not for long. You will soon meet fertile valley on a Table Mountain and at the same time see the sea to the north and south!
DAY 7: Sipahi - Dipkarpaz I, 14.6 km, Stage 15.
The hike begins behind the village past the cemetery. The wide road descends first but then goes uphill again. From the mountain top, you’ll be able to see Kaleburnu village to the south and the sea on both sides.
DAY 8: Dipkarpaz I - Dipkarpaz II, 9.5km, Stage 16.
This is a very interesting walk and it seems at first that you are backing onto yourself as the initial part is along the seafront. After you reach Oasis restaurant and its beach (where turtles lay eggs in the summer season), you then go uphill towards the busy little village of Dipkarpaz.
DAY 9: Dipkarpaz II - Aphrodite’s ruins, 14.6 km, Stage 17.
At this stage, you will be crisscrossing the width of the peninsula. Starting from Dipkarpaz you go towards the southern coast and walk along it for a while. The trail doesn’t get steep until almost at the end when you go over the hills.
DAY 10: Aphrodite’s ruins - Cape Zafer, 17.9 km, Stage 18.
Lonely juniper bushes and carob trees grow at the narrow flats along the ridge. The path reaches the coast again near Cape Zafer. The mildly green hills, the reddish sandy trail and the turquoise sea make a harmonic picture out of this untouched landscape.
DAY 11 - Return or prolongation.
Comfortable 2 to 3 star accommodation, family-run, all with en suite facilities. You start with an eco-style guesthouse accommodation overlooking the Mediterranean. You will then be transported to the unspoiled Karpaz peninsula to be lodged in a complex of two-story villas with massive gardens where the beach and its bar are within a short walk. Finally, you will be taken to Dipkarpaz and will enjoy another guesthouse with friendly hosts and a lovely rustic atmosphere.
